Hiking in the Southwest-Arizona
Today I took a break from internet marketing and went on a 6 hour hike up the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, Arizona. It was a beautiful day with the temperature in the mid 70′s. I hiked with my husband and two other friends and we met about 2 dozen other hikers along the way.
This is not a hike you want to do alone because of the difficulty of all kinds of terrain, but also it’s a little tricky to stay on the trail. We were glad to see that someone had added spray paint markings since the last time we did this hike. Hiking this trail is a full body work out. It’s helpful to be strong, flexible and aerobically conditioned.
I’ve done a fair amount of hiking on many trails but this is the only hike that I have had to do rock climbing for about 1.5 hours. I wore gloves to keep my grip and could sure feel my leg muscles with every lift as well as my arms to pull me up. Another challenge was the area of smooth rocks that requires sure footed side stepping. We saw a man take a fall and donated our first aid kit with band aids. It’s great how hikers help each other out on the trail. We met a couple of people who gave up their extra trail bars since we were running out. This strenuous climbing took more energy then some of us were prepared for. As for me, I always bring extra water which I shared. Some people don’t realize that in the dry Arizona desert you need more water even if it isn’t hot weather.
This is one of our first training hikes to prepare us for the Grand Canyon which we will hike in June. I’m not actually a couch potato and I mostly practice natural healing but after this hike I will be taking a couple of pain relievers. Oh I forgot to mention, the scenery was spectacular that definitely made it all worth it!

Hello Ann,
When I saw the title of your post I was expecting Devon and Cornwall! – but Arizona sounds interesting.
I know what you mean about the paint markers. I have just returned from a hiking holiday in Spain, and there were yellow paint markers at every point on the trail where we had to choose a direction. It made it almost impossible to get lost.
I envy your June holiday. I have just watched the film ‘Thelma and Louise’ and the Grand Canyon looks really spectacular. Good luck with your blog.
Best Wishes
John
